How to Verify Your CMS Violet, Blue, or Green Transportation Zone by Address
CMS splits Mecklenburg into Violet, Blue, and Green transportation zones. See the official high school table, the bus rule, and how to verify any address.

Published September 2026. Zone lists come from CMS materials as of this date. CMS is the only authority on zone and school assignment for a specific address.
Quick answer
Violet, Blue, and Green are CMS transportation zones tied to home high school attendance areas. Under Program Choice, which starts in 2027-28, your zone decides which program campuses a student can reach on a district bus. You can apply to programs in any zone through the lottery, but CMS will not provide a bus outside your assigned zone.
Before you write an offer, run the exact address through the official CMS lookup. A high school name, a neighborhood name, or a map on social media is not enough.
Start here: the zone is about the bus, not the lottery
Two separate questions get mixed together:
- Can a student apply to a program in another zone? Yes. The lottery is open across zones.
- Will CMS provide the bus to that program? Only if the program campus is inside the student's assigned zone.
So the zone does not limit where you can apply. It limits where CMS will drive. If you win a seat outside your zone, transportation is on your household every school day for as long as the student is enrolled.
How CMS defines the three zones
CMS groups transportation zones by home high school attendance area. As of September 2026, CMS materials list them this way:
| Zone | Home high school attendance areas |
|---|---|
| Violet | Chambers, Hopewell, Hough, Mallard Creek, North Mecklenburg, West Charlotte, West Mecklenburg (Violet portion) |
| Blue | Ardrey Kell, Ballantyne Ridge, Harding, Myers Park, Olympic, Palisades, South Mecklenburg, West Mecklenburg (Blue portion) |
| Green | Butler, East Mecklenburg, Garinger, Independence, Providence, Rocky River |
Two things to know about this table:
- West Mecklenburg appears twice. CMS program pages describe a Violet portion and a Blue portion of the West Mecklenburg High feeder pattern. If an address is in that attendance area, the high school name alone does not tell you the zone.
- Other feeder patterns can split at the program level. CMS program pages also refer to "Green portions" of the Garinger and Rocky River feeder patterns when describing which middle and elementary campuses serve which students. Program-level service can be more detailed than the high school table suggests.
This table is for orientation only. The address lookup is the answer.
Bus or self-transport: a decision tree
Work through these in order for each address you are considering:
- Confirm the zone for the exact address with CMS tools. Do not guess from the high school name.
- Name the program the student plans to apply for (Arts, Montessori, World Languages, STEM, Early and Middle Colleges, or IB and LI/TD).
- Check whether a campus offering that program is inside your zone for 2027-28.
- Yes: District bus service may be available, subject to CMS eligibility rules.
- No: You can still apply through the lottery, but plan to provide transportation yourself.
- Check for exceptions. WFAE reported that some STEM programs, including Second Ward and Berry, were described with countywide transportation. Confirm the current rule with CMS for the specific program.
- Price the drive. If self-transport is likely, time the round trip at school drop-off and pickup hours and count it as a real, recurring cost.
Do this before you write an offer. After closing, the address is fixed.
Verify by address before you commit money
Here is the verification routine we use with buyers:
- Pull the full property address, including any unit number.
- Run it through the CMS address lookup and the Transportation Zones page on cmsk12.org.
- Record the zone and assigned schools. Save a dated screenshot for your file.
- If the address sits in a split feeder pattern, contact CMS Student Placement to confirm.
- Recheck after CMS releases fall 2026 boundary drafts. Attendance boundaries are a separate process and can change assignments.
- Finish the check before your due diligence period ends.
Citadel Cofield will walk the lookup with you on any address you are serious about. We do not substitute our own map for the CMS result.
Fair Housing: what we will and will not do
We will:
- Run the official CMS lookup with you for any address.
- Explain the bus rule and the lottery rule in plain English.
- Build verification into your offer timeline.
We will not:
- Rate schools or repeat third-party school ratings.
- Tell you which area to buy in to get a zone.
- Promise lottery outcomes or describe any zone as better than another.
- Steer anyone toward or away from any area based on a protected class.
Connect it to your purchase
Verify transportation zone and school assignment for the specific address before you write an offer. Do not start your search by picking a zone. Start with the homes that fit your budget, commute, and needs, then confirm each address with CMS.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Violet, Blue, and Green?
They are CMS geographic transportation zones tied primarily to home high school attendance areas. Your zone shapes which Program Choice campuses a student can reach with district bus service under the 2027-28 model. Always confirm the zone for a specific street address with CMS.
Can I live in one zone and attend a program in another?
You can apply across zones through the lottery. CMS will not provide a bus outside your assigned zone, so an out-of-zone seat becomes a daily drive for as long as the student is enrolled. Price that in before you write an offer.
Does a high school name tell me my zone?
Not always. CMS describes the West Mecklenburg High feeder pattern as split between the Violet and Blue zones, and some program pages refer to portions of other feeder patterns. Run the exact address through the CMS lookup.
How should buyers use this page?
As a transportation and verification guide. Use the CMS high school and zone table for orientation, then run the exact address through CMS tools before you remove contingencies. Ask Citadel to do that lookup with you. Do not treat any summary as an attendance guarantee.
Will Citadel Cofield recommend a zone or an area?
No. We do not recommend areas based on school assignment or transportation zones, and we do not rate schools. We help you verify the official CMS result for the addresses you choose.
